Date: 23rd and 24th March 2019
Venue: DRAC, UCTS
The School of Computing and Creative Media (SCM), UCTS had pulled off another successful Train-The-Teachers (TTT) programme in partnership with Chumbaka Sibu. With the DigitalMaker Movement gaining grounds, this year’s event saw a larger turnout of student mentors and teachers from over 16 participating schools from Sibu, Sarikei and Bintangor.
The purpose of the TTT programme was to prepare teachers and student mentors from UCTS to train students from their respective schools for the upcoming Young Innovators Challenge at the end of July 2019. Throughout the programme, participants learnt about coding and how to programme their Arduino microchips. They were also introduced to the Design Thinking process to guide them along the process of project design and construction. On the second day, all participants were tasked with building different digital projects that could be used to solve problems faced by canteen operators. Throughout the whole event, student mentors and teachers had taken up the mantle for their own learning and braved themselves to go beyond their comfort zone in learning and applying new knowledge. The TTT event had created a culture of creative thinking and collaborative learning between all participants over the two days.
Equipped with new education perspectives and technological know-how, the organizers hope that teachers and UCTS mentors would be able to propagate their learning to the students to keep the fire of the DigitalMaker Movement burning bright. To achieve that end, all schools and student mentors were given Arduino kits that were generously sponsored by the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research (MESTR) and TEGAS.
