221 teachers from primary schools in and around Sibu successfully completed 2-day Raspberry Pi training and were presented with certificate of completion at University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) Campus on 24th August 2022. The ceremony was attended by YB Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), who also presented the certificates. This Raspberry Pi Training Program is a fruitful collaboration of University of Technology Sarawak with Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak that bring a great impact to the primary schools teachers and students. Dr. Alan Ting, Eileen Ong, Elton Wong and Teo Boon Chen from the School of Computing and Creative Media were involved in the Raspberry Pi training program.

Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid, Vice Chancellor of UTS, in his welcome speech, praised the ministry for the initiative in fostering innovation and digital skills among youths through the use of Raspberry Pi, which is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor. The training program is an excellent initiative by the Sarawak government to ensure that our learners are future-ready and equipped to meet the needs of industry 4.0. YB Datuk Roland shared that primary schools to have at least one teacher with Raspberry Pi training. The program hopes to give teachers the opportunity to learn the basics on using Raspberry Pi and to explore the students to logic design and coding in order to develop apps, games and solve real-world problems.

In line with the objective of promoting STEM and ICT education to students in Sarawak, MEITD has provided over Raspberry Pi sets to primary schools all over Sarawak. Over the next 3 years the program will be delivered across Sarawak in collaboration with various higher education institutions in Sibu, Bintulu and Miri, as well as district education departments.

Other guests in attendance were Yang Berhormat Dr. Annuar Rapaee, Assistant Minister, Office for Education and Innovation, Yang Berhormat Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Assistant Minister, Office for Talent Development, Datu Kameri Haji Affandi, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak, Dr. Les Anak Met, Timbalan Pengarah Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Sarawak (Sektor Pembelajaran), and Professor Wallace Wong Shung Hui, Director, Future Projects & CEO, Swinburne Innovation Malaysia, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus.
