Sarawak Invention & Innovation Technology Exhibition 2018 (Saintex) and STEM Playground were held at the University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) from 10th to 12th August 2018. These two events were co-organised by UCTS, Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS), Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA). Both events were open to the public and admission was free.
For Saintex, there were exhibitions and a public competition where a total of 29 participants will showcase their inventions and innovations. It was a platform for the creators or inventors to either improve their invention through the sharing of ideas or commercialise them.
For STEM Playground, the objective was to promote STEM education among school children through various STEM-related activities by various schools and industry players, such as Petrosains, Planetarium Sultan Iskandar, CR8 Robotic Borneo, Chumbaka and DreamCatcher which would nurture their interest further. UCTS plays a part in cultivating STEM interest among school children as the government’s target is to have 60% of students pursuing science and mathematics.
Young Innovators Challenge (YIC) competition was held in conjunction of STEM Playground. Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) Talent and Digital Entrepreneurship Vice President Sumithra Nair, UCTS’ Centre for Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD) director Associate Professor Dr Ramli Rashidi and UCTS’ School of Computing Dean Associate Professor Dr Bakri Madon presented the prizes to the winners.
Three teams from SMK Rosli Dhoby won gold awards in YIC competition. The teams Youniverse, Infinity RD and Titan Inventor competed under the secondary school category. The silver award winners were SHS T3 from SMK Sacred Heart, The Three Frankenstein from SMK Rosli Dhoby and White Shield from SMK Methodist. The bronze award recipients were Gen Z from SMK Methodist, 6 from SMK Sungai Merah, Fantastic Science from SMK Lanang, Girl’Sard from SMK Kampung Nangka and Super G from SMK Methodist.
For the Junior Innovate (JI) challenge for primary schools, the gold award winners were teams from SJK Thai Kwang namely Super Techies, Quest Tech and Kingstech. Teams Savvy Youngsters from SJK Thai Kwang, Fantastic Boom from SK Bandaran Sibu No.3 and Cool Partners from SK Bandaran Sibu No.3 were the silver award winners. Three teams from SK Abang Ali namely Abang Ali Kuat, Abang Ali Boleh and Abang Ali Cerdik as well as JJ Team from SJK Su Lai won the bronze award.
