The first in Sibu and UTS – IEEE bringing staffs and students for humanitarian projects

On April 8, UTS kicked off the first annual general meeting (AGM) for the establishment of the IEEE UTS Student Branch. The meeting was conducted in hybrid mode, attended by 15 staffs and 26 students from various Schools and Programmes. IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics of Engineers) is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. In line with its vision and mission, the Dean of SCM, Ts. Dr. Alan Ting Huong Yong and the Vice Chancellor of UTS Prof. Datuk Dr. Khairuddin Ab Hamid are fully supporting the operation of this branch.

This is the first student branch in Sibu, and to be delighted to connect within the Sarawak region: between the northern region (Curtin Malaysia student branch) and the southern region (Swinburne Sarawak student branch).

Although the branch was just established, the staffs and students are excited to collaborate with Swinburne University of Technology for a community project in the Sibu area. A solar lighting system will be installed in the surrounding of SK Kampung Bahagia Jaya, Sibu for the convenience of the teachers and students, especially during the early morning of the schooling season. The project is fully funded by IEEE to achieve the united nation sustainable goal. This project will involve more than 20 student members and professional members.

The first chair of the student branch, David Lim, a student from Bachelor of Computer Science said: “Let’s embrace this world, it is the time for us to contribute to the community with what we have learned in the campus.” He motivated the students during the closing remark of AGM and sent a welcoming invitation to all for joining the branch to serve the community.

The first AGM was closed with an amazing response. The committee team consists of 21 students and lead by four advisors, Dr. Chew Kim Mey (SCM), Dr. Yong Ching Yee (SET), Dr. Yiiong Siew Ping (SCM), and Mr. Tiong Tung Chuan (SET). The advisor, Dr. Chew, expressed her gratitude to the management for supporting the branch and appreciates the commitment from the team and students. She add-on that, there will be more humanitarian projects in the following days for the sake of the Sibu community.
