UTS School of Computing and Creative Media

Hour of Code Event 2017

Date: 9th December 2017

In conjunction with the Computer Science Education Week, which is an annual global event held during the first week of each December, UCTS School of Computing and Creative Media organized a workshop called “Hour-of-Code:  Building Your First Mobile App” which was held on 9 December 2017. Twenty-Six students participated in this workshop comprising sixteen Foundation in Science students and ten Foundation in Arts students.

The event was a great success in terms of cultivating students interest, passion and engagement level in computer science. It is a one-hour introduction to computing, designed to demystify the world of “coding", to prove that anybody can learn the basics, and to stimulate concepts or ideas to enrich lives and solve problems and challenges faced by society, business, government and other sectors.

Coding or programming is a basic literacy in the digital age. Through coding, the students are able to turn their great ideas into innovation which bring it to life. Coding does not have to be hard to learn. The students had proven that they were able to learn and create their first mobile app within an hour. The students were able to build the blocks of codes quickly using the MIT App Inventor 2 development tool and deployed it into their smart phones.
